I don't think I like Ping.fm. Only because I feel it will make my social networking less personal and too redundant.

I just checked out ping.fm tonight, but I think I agree. Maybe occasional status updates, but otherwise it's just broadcasting, not community and local culture.
i use ping.fm for two reasons: when i need to be mobile, and because the people who follow me on plurk, don't follow me here or on twitter and vice versa x2. ;] but i always get online (sometimes through opera mini on my phone like i am now) to follow up on comments and updates. until they fix jaiku's sms functionality, twitter is the only one i can follow from my phone. even so, i only have the very most interesting-est people sent to my phone. ;D but i do agree with your perception of ping.fm and i'll need to make sure i don't overuse it.
